Matter versions

Matter updates often, and the SDK and data API grow with it. Each app says which versions of Matter it runs on, in matter.json:

{
"minMatterVersion": "0.4.0",
"maxMatterVersion": "0.9.0"
}
  • minMatterVersion is required: the oldest Matter that can run the app. matter app create writes the version you’re on. matter app deploy stops if it’s missing.
  • maxMatterVersion is optional: the newest Matter the app is known to run on. Leave it out unless a newer Matter breaks your app.

Versions are three numbers, like 0.4.0.

A computer outside the range doesn’t open the app. Instead it shows:

  • “Update Matter to use App”, with the version it needs, when its Matter is older than minMatterVersion;
  • that the app doesn’t support this version of Matter yet, when its Matter is newer than maxMatterVersion.

The app’s worker and run server don’t start there either.

  • Raise minMatterVersion when you start using something a newer Matter added: a new SDK call, a new option. Members on older versions are asked to update.
  • matter app deploy tells you when the computer you deploy from is outside the range, since you won’t be able to open the app there.
  • After updating Matter, run matter app types again: the SDK’s types come with Matter.
