Connected apps
Connected apps give your agents tools for the services you use: email, calendars, issue trackers, chat and many more. You connect an account once, and your agents can then read from it and act in it for you.
Click Connections in the sidebar to see your accounts.
Connect an app
Section titled “Connect an app”- On Connections, click Connect app.
- Search the catalog, or scroll through it. Click an app to see what it does and the tools it offers.
- Click Connect. Matter opens the app’s sign-in page in your browser. Finish signing in there.
When sign-in completes, the account opens in Matter and is listed under My Accounts, named after the account, such as your email address. To connect a second account for the same app, click Add account on it in the catalog.
Agents can also ask you to connect something:
- In a thread, an agent’s request offers to connect the app, for example Connect Gmail. If you already have accounts for it, it lists each as Use followed by the account, and marks the one it suggests Requested.
- Your brief can offer Connect Gmail in the same way. Once the app is connected, the offer reads Gmail connected.
Keep an account to yourself or share it
Section titled “Keep an account to yourself or share it”An account you connect is yours. Open it and use Sharing to keep it to yourself (None) or share it with one space. Everyone in that space can then use it through their own agents. Choose None to stop sharing it.
Each space’s settings have a Connections section, which lists Your accounts in this space and those Shared by members. There:
- Connect app connects a new account straight into the space.
- Move existing account shares one of your accounts with this space. An account is in one space at a time.
If you’re not a member of a space, its Connections page offers Join space instead. When a space is deleted, its accounts go back to their owners.
On the Connections page, Other space accounts lists accounts that others shared in your spaces.
How agents use them
Section titled “How agents use them”Agents don’t load every app’s tools at once. They list the accounts available to you, search for the tool they need, and run it. Your agents can use:
- your own accounts that aren’t shared with a space;
- accounts shared with any space you’re a member of.
When you have more than one account for an app, the agent has to pick one. Tell it which to use if it matters.
An account’s details list its tools in three groups: Read, Write & send and Destructive.
Matter Assistant, your built-in routine, uses your connected apps to check your inboxes and calendars for anything that needs you.
Custom MCP servers
Section titled “Custom MCP servers”You can connect any MCP server. In Connect app, click Custom MCP, then choose a type:
- Streamable HTTP: a remote server. Enter an App name and the Server URL, plus any Headers (optional), such as an
Authorizationheader. Matter checks the server as you type and says whether it needs sign-in. If it does, you sign in with the provider after you click Connect. Matter’s server calls a remote server for your agents, so its URL must be reachable from the internet. - Stdio: a local server that runs as a command on your Mac when one of your agents uses it. Enter an App name, the Command, such as
npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-github, and any Environment variables.
Then click Connect.
A local server stays yours. You can’t share it with a space, so you add it from the Connections page, not from a space’s settings.
To change a custom server later, open its account. Edit the URL and headers, or the command and environment variables; changes save as you type. Under Tools, the refresh button reloads the server’s tool list.
Manage an account
Section titled “Manage an account”Click an account on Connections to open its details.
- The switch beside its name turns the account off without removing it. Agents can’t use it while it shows Disabled.
- When a sign-in expires, the account shows Needs sign-in, and agents can’t use it until you click Reconnect and sign in again.
- Delete removes the account.
Only the account’s owner can change or delete it.
