Settings and the CLI

Open Settings with ⌘, or the gear at the bottom of the sidebar. The left column has two groups: Personal, for your own settings, and a group named after the current workspace.

General

  • Send shortcut: whether Enter sends a message or adds a new line. ⇧↵ always adds a new line.
  • Follow-up behavior: Steer sends a message into the current turn when it can. Queue runs it next.
  • Default folder: where new threads start on this Mac when their space has no folder of its own.
  • Default model: used for new chats and for routines set to Default.
  • Personal instructions: how AI should work with you in this workspace. Only you see them.
  • Dictation shortcut (Caps Lock by default), Dictation mode (Push to talk or Toggle) and Dictation language.
  • Keep computer awake while agents work, and Also when the lid is closed.
  • Response ready: a notification when an agent on this Mac finishes a response you aren’t looking at.
  • Tab Autocompletions: suggests the next few words as you write. Press Tab to accept. Pick its Autocomplete model.

Default model and Personal instructions follow you to every Mac. The rest of this section applies to this Mac only.

Profile: your Display name, your Timezone (Automatic follows the Mac you’re using), your email address, your password, and accounts you sign in with.

Appearance: Color Mode (Light, Dark or System) and Wallpaper, which themes Matter with your desktop picture or a photo. Right-click the light and dark switch at the bottom of the sidebar for the same options.

Brief: when a new brief starts. See Home and the brief.

Devices: your Macs, their AI accounts and what agents may control on them. See Devices.

  • General: the Workspace name, its icon, AI instructions for every member, Leave workspace and Delete workspace. Only owners and admins can change the name, icon or instructions, or delete the workspace.
  • Spaces: New space, and every space you can join. See Spaces.
  • Members: members and their roles, Invite people, and Pending invitations.

AI instructions come in layers. Workspace, space and personal instructions all apply, from an agent’s next turn.

Shortcut What it does
⌘K Search or run a command
⌃Tab Switch to a recent page. Hold Control, press Tab to move, release to go.
⌘N New thread
⇧⌘N New window
⌘1 to ⌘5 Home, My Tasks, Routines, Connections, Settings
⌘, Settings
⌘[ and ⌘] Back and forward
⌘F Find on the page
⌘Z and ⇧⌘Z Undo and redo

⌘1 to ⌘5 don’t work while you’re typing in a text field.

⌘K opens the command menu. With nothing typed, it lists recent pages and commands such as New Thread, New Task and New Note. Type to search threads, tasks, boards, docs, notes, routines, spaces, tables and rows.

To quit, hold ⌘Q until the bar fills. Closing the last window with ⌘W works the same way.

Matter comes with matter, a command-line tool for Matter apps and tables. It works through Matter on your Mac and acts as you.

While Matter is running and you’re signed in, the tool is at ~/.matter/bin/matter. Threads your agents run already have it. To use it in your own terminal, add its folder to your PATH in ~/.zshrc:

Terminal window
export PATH="$HOME/.matter/bin:$PATH"

Open a new terminal window and run matter help.

The top-level commands:

  • matter help (or matter --help) lists every command.
  • matter app creates, develops, deploys and runs Matter apps. See The matter command.
  • matter table apply <schema.json> [--space <space>] [--prune] creates the tables, fields, options and indexes a schema file names. They go in the space you name with --space, or else in the space of the app in the current folder. It removes nothing, except with --prune, which removes indexes on those tables that the schema doesn’t name.
