Getting started

Matter is a workspace where you and AI agents work together. You talk to agents in threads, keep work in spaces, and catch up on Home.

Sign in with your email and password, or with Continue with Google or Continue with GitHub, which finish in your browser. To make an account, click New to Matter? Create an account. Forgot password? emails you a reset link.

To use a second account, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then Add account. Switch accounts from the same menu.

A workspace holds your team’s spaces, members and settings.

The first time you sign in, click Get started, name your workspace, and click Create workspace. If someone invited you, you can join their workspace instead. Matter then helps you invite your team or join spaces, connect your AI (your ChatGPT or Claude subscription), and choose a default model. You can skip steps. Home shows a Getting set up checklist for what’s left.

Click the workspace name at the top of the sidebar to switch workspaces. The same menu has Create workspace, Workspace settings and, for admins, Invite members.

Each member is an Owner, Admin or Member. Owners and admins can invite people, change others between Admin and Member, rename the workspace, set its icon and AI instructions, and delete it.

To invite someone, click Invite members, or Invite people in Settings, then Members. Enter their email and click Send invitation, or Create link to share the link yourself. Invitations expire after seven days. The person clicks Accept invitation in the email and signs in with that address.

To leave, use Leave workspace in the workspace’s General settings. Your work is kept, but your routines stop until you rejoin.

A space organizes work around a team, project or topic. Each has its own task boards, tables, docs, threads, connected apps and AI instructions. Every workspace starts with a space called General that everyone belongs to.

To create a space, click New space at the bottom of the sidebar, name it, and choose who can join:

  • Private: Only invited members may join this space.
  • Open: Anyone in the workspace can join this space.
  • Everyone: Everyone is added automatically. Only admins can choose this.

Settings, then Spaces, lists Your Spaces and Available Spaces. Add to sidebar joins an open space. Remove from sidebar or Leave space takes you out.

Hover a space’s name in the sidebar and click the gear for its settings: General (name, AI instructions, folder on this Mac, Delete space), Connections (see Connected apps), Apps (see Matter apps) and Members.

From top to bottom:

  • The workspace switcher and Search (⌘K), which finds anything and runs commands.
  • Home, with your brief and composer. See Home and the brief.
  • My Tasks, Routines, Notes and Connections.
  • Pinned: anything you pin with Pin in a row’s menu.
  • Threads: your threads with no space. The pen button starts a New thread.
  • Your spaces, each with its task boards, tables, docs, apps and threads. Hover a space’s name for a + button that adds a Task board, Table, Doc or Thread. Drag spaces to reorder them.
  • At the bottom: your name (with Personal settings and Sign out), Settings, and a light and dark switch.

Each Mac you use Matter on is a device. It adds itself when Matter connects. Your agents, routines and Matter apps run on a device, with that Mac’s ChatGPT or Claude sign-in and its files.

  • A new thread runs on the Mac you start it from. Choose Device in the composer’s model menu to run it on another of your Macs.
  • Each routine runs on the device set in its settings.
  • Folders are per device. A space’s Folder and your Default folder set where new threads start on this Mac.

Settings, then Devices, lists your Macs. Click one to see its Agent Backends (ChatGPT and Claude: install, sign in, and pick the account chats use), its Capabilities (see Browser and computer use), and its Agent runner status. You can only change a device’s settings on that Mac. Each row’s menu has Rename, Restart agent runner for this Mac, and Remove device for others.

Next, start a conversation with the assistant.
